Next to Davao City Hall, you’ll find a distinctive building: San Pedro Cathedral. Its architectural style is unlike any Catholic church I’ve seen before. This article shares my experience from a visit in August 2024.

San Pedro Metropolitan Cathedral in Davao

San Pedro Cathedral in Davao is a historic Catholic church that represents the Philippines, especially Davao City. Built in 1847 during the Spanish colonial era, it is now designated a National Cultural Treasure of the Philippines.

History and Features of San Pedro Cathedral

  • Spanish Colonial Era Structure: Built in the 19th century, this cathedral is one of the representative examples of Philippine architecture from the Spanish colonial period.

When I visited on a weekday, the spacious cathedral was almost empty. So, I went again before noon on a Sunday, and it was bustling with many families. There were sermons and songs, and everyone was taking photos.

Around the cathedral, there are shops selling statues of Christ and the Virgin Mary. These shops also sell candles, which people light at an adjacent facility for prayer. The candles come in seven colors, each said to have a different meaning.

Important Notes for Visiting San Pedro Cathedral

  • Dress Code: When entering the church, please ensure your shoulders and knees are covered.
  • Photography: Photography is permitted, but please do so quietly and with consideration for other worshippers.
  • Mass Times: During Mass, please maintain silence and respect. Mass times may change depending on holidays and seasons; it’s recommended to check in advance.

Surrounding Area Information

San Pedro Cathedral is located in the center of Davao City, with many restaurants and shops nearby. It’s highly recommended to stop by while sightseeing in the area.
