Introduction
Hanoi’s “Train Street,” located in the Old Quarter, is a unique tourist attraction. It has recently gained attention from tourists worldwide for its rare sight of trains passing right next to residential houses. This article, based on my visit to Hanoi in March 2023, will detail the charm, highlights, and important considerations when visiting Train Street.
Train Street: A Major Tourist Attraction in Hanoi
The Charm of Train Street
- Fusion of Daily Life and the Extraordinary: The sudden appearance of a train in an alleyway steeped in local life creates a powerful impression on visitors. The sight of locals leaning out of windows to watch the train pass, or enjoying meals right by the tracks, where their lives and the train are intertwined, is truly spectacular.
- Thrill and Excitement: Theドキドキ (heart-pounding excitement) of the train approaching. Many tourists can be seen with cameras ready, determined not to miss the perfect shot.
- Stunning Photo Spot: Photos capturing the moment a train passes are guaranteed to be popular on social media. The backdrop of colorful houses lining the tracks looks like a painting.
History and Current Status of Train Street
Train Street is said to have originated from houses built along railway tracks laid during the French colonial period. This unique landscape has persisted even as urban development progressed. However, in recent years, the increase in tourists has raised concerns about trespassing on the tracks and violations of manners. As a result, safety measures and regulations have been strengthened, making free photography more challenging than before.
Important Notes When Visiting Train Street
There is no entrance fee, but to sit at a table along the tracks, you must do so as a café customer. There are many similar cafes, and competition for customers is fierce. However, there’s generally no time limit, and a cup of coffee starts from around 200 yen, so it’s not an exorbitant price. Some cafes also have second-floor seating.
It gets crowded just before train arrival times. It’s recommended to secure a good seat a bit in advance.
- Safety First: When a train passes, move away from the tracks to a safe location.
- Mind Your Manners: Be considerate of local residents and enjoy your photography quietly.
- For the Best Shots: Early morning or evening is recommended. You can avoid backlighting and take beautiful photos.
- Caution During Rainy Season: The tracks can become slippery during the rainy season, so extreme caution is required.

Attractions Around Train Street
- Old Quarter: Train Street is located in the heart of the Old Quarter, lined with historic buildings and shops.
- Obama Set Stalls: Train Street attracts mostly Western tourists. The “Obama Set” – a combination of bun cha, fried spring rolls, and beer – became popular after former U.S. President Obama famously ate it during his visit to Hanoi. Stall vendors often call out “Obama” to attract customers.
- Hoan Kiem Lake: Hanoi’s iconic lake. Strolling along the lakeside or taking a boat ride is also recommended.
- Night Market: At night, a night market appears in the Old Quarter, offering a variety of goods.
Conclusion
Hanoi’s Train Street is a unique place in the world where the extraordinary blends into daily life. However, in recent years, the increase in tourists has created various environmental concerns. When visiting, please adhere to good manners and prioritize safety to preserve this valuable location for future generations.
