Monkey Forest is a temple complex surrounded by a rainforest, home to approximately 600 macaque monkeys. As you walk along the paths, you can observe the monkeys moving freely, feed them, and interact with them. This article shares information based on my visit in July 2023. Monkey Forest is within walking distance from Hanoman Street, where I was staying. Even before entering, monkeys can already be seen on utility poles and trees along the street lined with souvenir shops, building excitement before you even step inside.

  • Temples: There are three Hindu temples within Monkey Forest. The temples are built in traditional Balinese architectural style and are impressive to behold.
  • Souvenirs: The area around Monkey Forest is lined with souvenir shops and cafes. You can purchase various items, including traditional Balinese crafts and goods.

Tips for Visiting Monkey Forest

  • Be careful when feeding monkeys. Monkeys may pull on your hands or bags to get food. They might also bite or scratch if trying to snatch food.
  • Keep valuables on your person. Monkeys are mischievous and may snatch bags, hats, or other items.
  • Avoid revealing clothing inside temples. Temples are sacred places, so appropriate attire is necessary.
  • Watch your step as there are slippery areas. It can be especially slippery on rainy days.

How to Enjoy Monkey Forest

  • Visit in the early morning or late afternoon to see the monkeys most active.
  • When approaching monkeys, do so slowly and gently to avoid startling them.
  • Observe their behavior carefully, and if you feel unsafe, move away immediately.
